Expert of the Ministry of Health spoke about the consequences of taking antibiotics for COVID-19

Taking antibiotics by most patients with covid-19 will have adverse effects in the future. This was announced by the chief microbiologist and specialist in antimicrobial resistance of the Ministry of HEALTH of RUSSIA, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Roman Kozlov, RIA Novosti reports.

Kozlov cited studies showing that more than 90% of patients with COVID-19 receive antibiotics, including combination therapy and parenteral drugs (such as injections and inhalations), not only in hospitals, but also on outpatient basis.

“There is no doubt that the current situation will contribute to a significant increase in antimicrobial resistance and have serious adverse consequences in the future,” the specialist said.

The microbiologist explained that antibiotic therapy should be prescribed only if there are convincing signs of a bacterial infection. "Unreasonable antibiotic therapy leads to a number of adverse events that can significantly worsen the patient's condition, and sometimes lead to life-threatening consequences," Kozlov said.

In October, Kozlov pointed out that any antibiotics do not work on CORONAVIRUS and do not work "to prevent possible bacterial complications."

Earlier, Rospotrebnadzor warned that taking antibiotics without a doctor's prescription is also dangerous for influenza. The department reported that these drugs not only cannot cope with the virus, but also weaken the immune system and kill the microflora.
