China has spoken out against the seizure of Russia's frozen assets in the EU.

CHINA opposes any unilateral sanctions that violate international law. This is how Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun commented on the European Union's plans to use frozen Russian assets. His words are quoted by ChinaNews.

According to the diplomat, it is necessary to promote the creation of favorable conditions for peace negotiations and a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, and not vice versa.

"China has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that violate international law and are not authorized by the UN Security Council," Guo Jiakun said.

On December 12, the European Union decided to permanently freeze €210 billion worth of Russian assets. Previously, a vote every six months was required to extend the freeze. This new measure eliminates the risk that Hungary and Slovakia might at some point refuse to extend the freeze, which would force the EU to return the funds to RUSSIA.

Against this backdrop, the Central Bank filed a lawsuit in the Moscow Arbitration COURT against Euroclear, which holds frozen Russian assets. The lawsuit exceeded 18 trillion rubles. The Central Bank claimed that Euroclear's illegal actions had caused harm.

Frozen assets could be used to finance Ukraine as part of a so-called reparations loan. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on December 17 that the EU should decide on a financing option for Kyiv in the coming days.
