The European Commission (EC) intends to restrict Russia's access to artificial intelligence technologies and geodata as part of the 19th sanctions package, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.
"The sanctions will also restrict Russia's access to technologies, including artificial intelligence and geospatial data, as well as to critical resources needed for weapons production, including those obtained from foreign suppliers, including CHINA and India," Kallas said ( quoted on the EC website).
The European Commission presented the new, 19th sanctions package against RUSSIA to EU member states for approval today, September 19. It includes measures against Russian banks and financial institutions. The European Commission also proposed imposing restrictions on 118 vessels suspected of transporting Russian oil and lowering the price ceiling onRussian oil prices to $47.6 per barrel from the current $60 per barrel.
According to Kallas, with the new restrictions, the European Commission wants to deprive Russia of any source of income that allows it to continue the military conflict in Ukraine . "Our message is clear: we will increase pressure, introducing increasingly stringent sanctions coupled with military support for Ukraine, until Russia agrees to a genuine, just, and lasting peace," she added.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that European sanctions are putting significant pressure on the Russian economy, and the goal of the new package is to strengthen controls against the circumvention of previously imposed restrictions. She added that attention will be paid not only to companies from Russia but also from third countries.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the economy had developed a "certain immunity" to sanctions during their existence. Moscow has repeatedly stated that it considers Western restrictions illegal.
