Americans living abroad have begun to renounce their citizenship in their home countries more frequently for political reasons, The Washington Post (WP) reports, citing immigration lawyers and those who have decided to renounce their US citizenship.

According to WP, approximately 5,000–6,000 Americans abroad renounce their American passports every year. Lawyers say this is most often due to taxes (the US requires citizens to pay them even while living abroad) and logistical issues, but now there are more cases where politics plays a role.

"Politics has definitely become a more prominent feature recently. When we ask the question 'Why now?' it's become a factor," said London-based lawyer Maya Buckley.

The newspaper spoke with an anonymous American living in Britain. He said he submitted an application to renounce his citizenship after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election and has been waiting for a decision for almost a year; his application will soon be approved. The newspaper notes that the process of renouncing citizenship is not always quick.

"This [Donald Trump] government is so vindictive. This country is so different from the one I left," said one of those who decided to renounce their US passport.

Meanwhile, another American living in the UK decided to renounce her citizenship. After submitting an application to the embassy, she received the following response: "Due to unprecedented demand for citizenship loss services, we are unable to provide an estimated wait time for an appointment." The queues had already been building up during the pandemic.covid-19 due to restrictions on the work of diplomatic missions, WP clarifies.

The publication also cites a survey by the international tax consulting firm Greenback, according to which the number of American citizens living abroad considering renouncing citizenship increased from 30% to 49% between 2024 and 2025. Of these, 61% cited "taxes" as one of the reasons, followed by 51% who cited "dissatisfaction with the US government or policies."
