Cherepovets "Severstal" can spend the next season in the Higher Hockey League (VHL). RBC was told about this by two sources close to the club.

The reason why the management of Severstal is considering and discussing the option of leaving the Continental Hockey League (KHL) and moving to the second division is the financial problems that have arisen due to sanctions imposed by the EU on Alexei Mordashov.

Mordashov is the main owner and chairman of the board of directors of the Severstal enterprise, which is the general sponsor of the hockey club of the same name.

According to RKB interlocutors, Severstal can move to the VHL "for at least one season."

RBC sent inquiries to the Severstal representative and to the KHL.

Last season, Severstal finished fifth in the Western Conference in the regular season, and finished the playoffs after the first round, losing 3-4 to Dynamo Moscow.
