The Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara has reported its first outbreak of African swine fever since early 2021.
The first epizootic outbreaks of ASF in Indonesia appeared in July last year. Since then, the number of pigs that have died from this disease has been in the tens of thousands. At the end of 2020, the incidence subsided, there was hope that the situation had stabilized, but a new outbreak followed at the end of March.
Carolus Winfridus Keupung, HEAD of the non-profit association of farmers and fishermen in East Nusa Tenggara, said that the fight against the spread of the ASF virus is complicated by hushing up the death of animals. Some farm owners hide the facts of the death of pigs, and this causes huge losses to the entire local community. He added that measures to contain the epidemic are now being discussed in the Indonesian government.
