The State Duma adopted in the first reading a draft law on mandatory labeling of animals. Currently, the registration of animals is already carried out on the territory of the Russian Federation, in particular, marking and registration of cattle are carried out in 79 subjects of the Russian Federation, and in 41 regions, registration is carried out electronically. The bill introduces technical amendments in terms of replacing the term "identification" with the term "marking", the press service of the State Duma reported.

“Marking is the application to the body of an animal, fixation on the body of an animal or the introduction into the body of an animal of visual or mixed (combination of visual and electronic) marking means and is the responsibility of animal owners. Animal owners have the right to independently choose the type of marking means from the types of marking means provided for by the veterinary rules for marking and recording animals, depending on the type of animal,” the explanatory note says.

Information about marked animals will be contained in a single database of the Federal State Information System in the field of veterinary medicine.

At the same time, it is noted that animals that are not related to agricultural and belong to citizens will not be subject to registration. The procedure for registration of animals, the list of their species subject to individual or group marking, as well as the timing of such registration will be established by the Government.
