January 24, MINSK. In 2021, more than 35% of road accidents were caused by pedestrians. BelTA was informed about this by the Main Directorate of the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"Pedestrian collisions are one of the most common types of road accidents in which people suffer. In 2021, 1,126 road accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians were committed. Moreover, more than 35% (400 accidents) were committed by the direct fault of pedestrians. And in almost 50% of cases (197 accidents) injured pedestrians were in a state of alcoholic intoxication... This problem becomes especially relevant during cold periods: in early spring, late autumn and, of course, in winter, "the traffic police said.

In addition to all the negative natural and weather phenomena that manifest themselves in winter, such as heavy snowfalls, sudden temperature changes, slippery roadways and roadsides, as well as short daylight hours, the main reason for running over pedestrians is ignoring elementary security measures by them.

"Pedestrians should exercise extra caution when participating in traffic. Cross the road only in designated places. Before entering the carriageway, make sure that all cars have stopped. Carefully approach the edge of the carriageway so as not to slip under the wheels. Be careful when On suburban roads, move along roadsides and only in extreme cases, when the roadside is not suitable for movement, along the edge of the carriageway and without fail towards the movement of vehicles," the traffic police added.
