January 19, MINSK. In order to minimize negative trends in the field of road safety, improve the efficiency of work to eliminate the causes and conditions of road traffic accidents involving pedestrians, taking into account weather conditions and reducing daylight hours, additional preventive measures will be taken in Minsk from January 20 to 21 to prevention of traffic accidents involving pedestrians at night. BelTA was informed about this by Irina Boyarchuk, senior inspector for A&P of the traffic police department of the Oktyabrsky District Department of Internal Affairs of Minsk.

In addition to pedestrians, traffic policemen will pay special attention to drivers who do not give preference to pedestrians in traffic. In this regard, road guards will intensively patrol especially busy sections of roads near regulated and unregulated pedestrian crossings, which are most at risk of pedestrian collisions. Pedestrians who are in a state of intoxication or create the prerequisites for an accident by their behavior will be removed from the roadway.

In 2021, 711 accidents occurred in Minsk, 278 of them were collisions with a pedestrian, as a result of which 27 people died, 265 were injured. it should be noted that 194 collisions with pedestrians were made through the fault of drivers, 37 - through the fault of drunken pedestrians, 40 - due to pedestrians crossing the carriageway in an unspecified place, 8 - due to pedestrians entering the carriageway due to a standing vehicle.

The main reasons contributing to the commission of an accident involving pedestrians are: an unexpected exit of a pedestrian onto the carriageway due to obstacles that obstruct the view of drivers, crossing the carriageway in an unspecified place, crossing the road at a prohibiting traffic light, being pedestrians in a state of alcoholic intoxication , violation by drivers rules for the passage of pedestrian crossings, non-use by pedestrians at night of retroreflective elements.

The state traffic inspectorate urges pedestrians to be extremely careful when crossing the carriageway, to choose safe areas for this, specially designed for pedestrians - pedestrian crossings. When crossing the carriageway at the place set for this, you must first make sure that the vehicle has stopped and provides an advantage in traffic, even if the traffic light is green. The State Traffic Inspectorate also reminds pedestrians of the need to use retroreflective elements at night.
