Rospotrebnadzor is closely monitoring new information about the coronavirus detected in Brazil, the agency reported on its Telegram channel.
The novel coronavirus, BRZ batCoV, was detected in a small species of insectivorous bats, the agency's press service clarified. "There is no evidence that the novel coronavirus poses a threat to humans," the agency said in a statement.
BRZ batCoV belongs to the same genus of betacoronaviruses that cause COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), MERS (MERS-CoV), and SARS (SARS-CoV).
The risk of BRZ batCoV transmission from animals to humans remains low, but continued monitoring allows us to prepare for potential future challenges, the agency noted. Rospotrebnadzor remains monitoring the situation.
In August, Rospotrebnadzor (the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing) warned about the spread of the "stratus" coronavirus strain. Rospotrebnadzor head Anna Popova noted that the strain is more contagious than previous strains, but the illness is mild.
The first case of stratus infection in Russia was registered on April 24, and the first in the world was registered on January 27, 2025 , in Canada.
