Despite the northern climate and short summer, the farmers of the region returned to growing this crop to obtain additional amounts of green fodder for their livestock.
For the last five years fodder corn has been grown in the Vologda, Gryazovets and Sheksninsky districts. Just last year, on the fields of the Ustyugmoloko SHP, specialists allocated 200 hectares for cultivation. From one hectare the yield of green mass was 350 centners.
Corn silage is better suited for feeding dairy cows and is one of the most important energy ingredients in the diet. Energy sources are starch and fiber. In practice, it has been proven that with the introduction of corn green mass into the diet, the average daily MILK yield increases to 7-9%. In 2021, the area sown with corn in the region amounted to 3358 hectares, the gross harvest of corn for green mass was 985.8 thousand tons. High crop yields, despite adverse weather conditions, indicate a high level of technology for growing and harvesting corn for silage.
For several years, the largest area of corn has been sown in JSC "Plemzavod Zarya" in the Gryazovets district. This is one of the largest agricultural producers in the region, where more than 8 thousand heads of cattle are kept, including 4 thousand cows. According to the results of 2021, the sown area amounted to 15,704 hectares, of which 1,200 hectares are under corn. 3 thousand tons of corn silage have been laid.
Due to the quality characteristics of corn silage, the culture has firmly entered the TOP-cultivated agricultural crops in the region.
