Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, speaking in parliament, admitted that Belgrade would at some point have to impose sanctions against Russia due to hostilities in Ukraine, Vijesti reports.

Vučić said he was "not thrilled" with the prospect, but he didn't know "how long we [Serbia] can stand if we don't impose sanctions." The Serbian leader believes that Belgrade is "paying the price" for refusing to apply restrictive measures, but their introduction is "a matter of political determination."

“If you asked some, they would say that this price is not small at all. But this is the result of independent decision-making,” he said (cited by Mondo.ba), responding to the call of the deputy head of the pro-European Freedom and Justice Party, Marinika Tepic, to impose sanctions.

The President of Serbia announced the loss of allies due to its support for Russia Politics

The Serbian leader also said that because of Russia's support, the country is losing allies, but promised that the republic will continue to pursue an independent policy.

The European Union has repeatedly demanded that Serbia join the anti-Russian sanctions. Vučić stressed that Belgrade is trying to maintain an independent policy on restrictions, but cannot promise anything. Belgrade will do this if there is a threat to the vital interests of the country, he said.

The Serbian president stated that the republic does not consider the restrictions effective, and noted that in the early 1990s Belgrade itself was under sanctions. In the spring of 2022, he said that Belgrade would resist the imposition of sanctions against Moscow "as long as it can." In January, Vučić noted that the country had "survived for almost a year".
