The European Union is preparing a plan to impose sanctions on American companies if US President Donald Trump rejects a proposal to deploy NATO forces in Greenland, The Telegraph reports.
EU restrictions may affect Meta corporations (recognized as extremist in Russia and banned),GOOGLE ,MICROSOFT and X. They could be banned from operating on the continent, as would American banks and financial companies. A more radical option would be the withdrawal of American troops from their bases in Europe.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Until 1953, it was a Danish colony, then became part of the kingdom. In 1979, Greenland was granted home rule status, and in 2009, its autonomy was expanded, allowing it to exercise greater self-government.
The Telegraph reported on the plan to deploy NATO forces on the island in the same article. According to the newspaper's sources, the UK is negotiating with its European allies on a corresponding plan. The plans are still in the early stages of development.
Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly stated plans to incorporate Greenland into the United States. On January 4, in an interview with The Atlantic, he said the island was "absolutely essential" to Washington's defense.
The day before, he declared his readiness to “do something” regarding Greenland even without the consent of its residents, in order to prevent the strengthening of Russia or China there .
On January 10, The Mail on Sunday reported that Donald Trump ordered the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to develop a plan to invade Greenland. However, the US Chiefs of Staff opposed the idea, arguing that such an operation would be illegal and would not receive congressional approval.
In late December 2025, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, appointed by Trump as special envoy for Greenland, made a statement about the island. He emphasized that the US presidential administration was not seeking "conquest" but was prepared to offer "economic support and protection."
