The United States has undermined its credibility as a negotiable country by freezing Russian funds in American banks, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said on the Russia 24 TV channel.

Earlier, Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Jake Sullivan said that Washington was not going to return the property of Russian businessmen confiscated under sanctions and would find a better use for it. In this regard, Antonov was asked if the United States could do the same with Russian diplomatic property and if there was a chance that it would be returned. “I’ll tell you for sure: I firmly believe that nothing will be returned to us,” he replied.

“You have not yet mentioned the huge funds that are frozen in American banks. And I will frankly say: I think that they were simply stolen from us. And thus, by such actions, the Americans have undermined confidence in themselves as a negotiable country that you can trust, with which you can negotiate anything,” the ambassador added.

According to him, in the current situation, other "rash steps" on the part of the United States cannot be ruled out, including blocking the accounts of ordinary Russians.

Since the end of February, the United States has repeatedly tightened sanctions against Russia. They imposed restrictions both on the country's top leadership, in particular President Vladimir Putin, Defense and Foreign Ministers Sergei Shoigu and Sergei Lavrov, and on a number of businessmen and company heads. Among the businessmen who fell under US sanctions are the head of Transneft Nikolai Tokarev, Boris and Arkady Rotenberg, Evgeny Prigozhin, the founder of USM Holdings Alisher Usmanov and others. The United States also froze the reserves of the Central Bank.

In the Kremlin, the seizure of the assets of Russian businessmen was compared to a robbery. “These are absolutely honest legal entrepreneurs. They were robbed in the same way that travelers in the Wild West were robbed with the help of Smith and Wesson, ”said Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the president.
