European Parliament proposed to impose sanctionsagainst Schroeder if he does not leave his posts in Russian companies. In addition to him, ex-Foreign Minister of Austria Karin Kneissl Gerhard Schroeder may also be subject to restrictions.

MEPs intend to call on EU countries to include former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on the EU sanctions list, Die Welt said.

The European Parliament adopted the relevant resolution by an overwhelming majority. As follows from the document, Schroeder is accused of continuing to cooperate with Russian state-owned companies, in particular with Rosneft, in which he heads the board of directors.

In addition to Schroeder, former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl may also be subject to sanctions. Since June last year, she has also been on the board of directors of Rosneft.

MEPs are proposing to include them, as well as other "European board members of large Russian companies and politicians who continue to receive money from RUSSIA," on the sanctions list if they do not leave their posts. Possible sanctions will include freezing the assets of the defendants in Europe.

Schroeder found it impossible to isolate Russia in the long term Politics

Schröder was German Chancellor from 1998 to 2005. Since 2017, he has been the HEAD of the board of directors of Rosneft, and is also the chairman of the shareholders' committee of Nord Stream AG, the operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. In addition, in early February, he was nominated to the board of directors of Gazprom instead of the son-in-law of the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, Timur Kulibayev.

Against the background of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the current German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Schroeder to leave his posts in Russian state-owned companies. As no decision was made, all members of Schroeder's parliamentary office resigned, the New York Times (NYT) reported. And German Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner called for the termination of state financial support for the office of the former chancellor.

Schroeder himself noted that he “always served the interests of Germany,” and considers the events in Ukraine a mistake. According to the NYT, since the beginning of the Russian special operation, he has tried to mediate between the parties. So, in March, Politico reported on the meeting of the ex-chancellor with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, and Bild - about his meeting in the capital with businessman Roman Abramovich and presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky. However, these efforts were unsuccessful, the NYT noted.
