EU urges Georgia not to let Russian planes into its territory

EUcall on Georgia, as a candidate for membership in the union, to join the sanctions and prevent Russian aircraft from entering its airspace

The European Union called on Georgia to comply with sanctions against Russia and not to let Russian planes into its territory, this was stated by the representative of the EU Foreign Service Peter Stano, TASS reports .

“The European Union has banned flights to its airlines to and over Russia and is calling on other countries, including Georgia, which claims to be a candidate for EU membership, to join these sanctions,” he said.

The day before, on May 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree lifting the ban on flights to Georgia. In addition, he abolished the visa regime for Georgian citizens.

The visa-free regime between Russia and Georgia was abolished after the 2008 conflict. In 2012, Georgia unilaterally introduced a visa-free regime for Russians. According to the current rules, a Russian citizen can stay in the country for 365 days. Russia

suspended direct flights to Georgia in June 2019. This was preceded by protests in Tbilisi, which began after the scandal with State Duma deputy from the Communist Party Sergei Gavrilov, who sat in the speaker's chair during the opening of the meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy in the Georgian Parliament.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili called Putin's decision a provocation. In her opinion, such actions are unacceptable as long as "as long as Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine and occupies our territory." The party "United National Movement" in the decrees of the President of Russia saw an attempt to prevent the European integration of Georgia.

Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze called Zurabishvili's statement absurd and illogical. The Kremlin called the decision on air travel and visas humanitarian.
