Aven and Fridman challenged the decision to impose sanctions against them in the EU court

Russian billionaires decided to challenge the sanctionsthe European Union, under which they fell at the end of February. Aven and Friedman previously stated,

Russian businessmen Pyotr Aven and Mikhail Fridman filed lawsuits with the European COURT in Luxembourg against the EU Council, which imposed sanctions against them in late February in connection with Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, a representative of the tribunal told TASS.

The court registered Aven's claim on May 23, and Fridman on May 24.

Friedman compared life under sanctions to house arrest

FORBES estimates the fortune of Aven and Fridman at $4.6 billion and $12.9 billion. The European Union imposed sanctions against entrepreneurs on February 28. A publication in the official journal of the EU on the sanctions claimed that Aven "benefited from his connections in power" and Friedman "managed to develop strong ties with the administration of [Russian President] Vladimir Putin." Restrictive measures include freezing assets in the EU and a ban on entry. 

Businessmen called the decision of the European Union unreasonable and capable of causing unjustified damage to employees, customers, partners and businesses and promised to challenge the imposed sanctions.

In addition to them, the owner of Severstal Alexei Mordashov filed a lawsuit against the EU Council in the European Court of General Jurisdiction. He also considers the sanctions imposed against him illegal, a representative of the entrepreneur told RBC. Alisher Usmanov also filed an appeal against the EU decision on restrictive measures, BLOOMBERG learned.
