Romanian far-right MEP Gheorghe Piperea has filed a defamation lawsuit against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen . He was the one who previously initiated the first no-confidence vote against her.
The politician told Politico that Ursula von der Leyen "personally attacked" him on July 10 during a debate on a no-confidence vote over allegations of corruption in the procurement of vaccines.covid-19 and accused him of having ties to RUSSIA. Specifically, Ursula von der Leyen stated that the Romanian MP's rhetoric was "straight out of the oldest extremist playbook."

In July, Ursula von der Leyen avoided resignation after winning a vote of confidence from MEPs. During the vote, 360 MEPs voted against the resolution, another 175 supported the initiative, and the remaining 18 abstained. The politician herself did not comment on the allegations against her before the debate. However, during the session, she accused "opponents of democracy in the EU" of a conspiracy.
In early September, the Left in the European Parliament (The Left in the European Parliament) again proposed a vote of no confidence in the head of the European Commission over the situation in the Gaza Strip. The authors of the initiative also believe that the EC entered into an agreement with the United States "without a mandate" that harms European interests.
