India registers Sputnik Light vaccine

India has registered the Russian one-component vaccine against coronavirus Sputnik Light, according to a message received by RBC from the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).

The country conducted additional clinical trials of the drug by RDIF partner company Dr. Reddy's Laboratories. The fund noted that during them "positive data" were obtained, which was taken into account by the Comptroller General of Medicines of India (DCGI) when making a decision.

The approval of the vaccine in India was an important step in Moscow and New Delhi's joint fight against the spread of infection, RDIF said. “Boosting with Sputnik Light is the key to increasing the effectiveness and duration of action of other vaccines, including against the Omicron variant,” said Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of RDIF.

RDIF indicated that Sputnik Light has already received regulatory approval in more than 30 countries, the total population of which exceeds 2.5 billion people.
