The city in the Czech Republic deprived Tereshkova of the status of an honorary citizen

The deputies of the largest city in the south of the Czech Republic, Český Budějovice, have decided to deprive the first female cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, of the status of an honorary citizen of the city. It is reported by Budejcka Drbna.

One member of the ruling party voted against this decision, as well as the entire composition of the opposition Communist Party. So, the representative of the association "Citizens for Budejovice" Jan Kubesh recalled that Tereshkova received this status for flying into space.

“I understand the position of some colleagues, because the situation in Ukraine is critical, and I do not approve of it, but, in my opinion, we have no right to take revenge in this way for what is happening in Ukraine. In my opinion, we do not have a mandate for this,” Kubesh said.

However, a member of the Christian Democratic Union - the Czechoslovak People's Party, Shimon Heller, did not agree with him, stressing that the deputies have a mandate for this. He pointed out that Tereshkova is close to Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Valentina Tereshkova received the status of honorary citizen of Česká Budějovice in 1979.

Earlier on May 9, deputies of the Prague City Council approved the deprivation of the title of honorary citizen of the Soviet commander and Marshal Ivan Konev, who received it in 1946.
