According

to the case file, the accused was drinking alcohol with a co-worker on the night of June 27-28 of this year. "Intoxicated, he deliberately violated safety regulations and got behind the wheel of a leased Mercedes passenger car, and, together with his acquaintance, drove from Minsk toward Moscow," the Prosecutor General's Office's Department for Media Relations reported.

Around 5:00 a.m., on the 20th kilometer of the M2 Minsk - Minsk National Airport highway near the village of Korolev Stan, the driver was traveling at 182 km/h (112 mph) when the speed limit is 90 km/h (56 mph). While communicating with a passenger, he was distracted from driving. Due to failure to maintain a safe distance from a taxi driving in front, the accused collided with it.

As a result of the accident, the taxi passengers—a 43-year-old woman, her 75-year-old mother, and two daughters aged 7 and 13—died at the scene, while the 40-year-old driver suffered less serious injuries due to a long-term HEALTH condition lasting no more than four months.

"The deceased were citizens of the Russian Federation and arrived in Belarus for tourism. At the time, they were heading to the airport to return home to Berezniki in the Perm Territory—less than two hours remained before their flight," the Prosecutor General's Office clarified.

The driver at fault had previously been repeatedly held administratively liable for traffic violations, including twice, in 2017 and 2019, when his license was revoked. The most recent instance was for driving under the influence of alcohol, serving a three-year suspension.

After the accident, the driver's blood alcohol level was 2.18 ppm. The Prosecutor General's Office noted that he was acutely intoxicated at the time of the accident.

It is also known that two hours before the accident, the accused, while driving away from his home in the capital, damaged a neighbor's car parked in the yard and fled the scene. That evening, he transferred the Mercedes to an acquaintance who did not have a driver's license.

To avoid prosecution for speeding, the accused removed the license plates from the car before the trip. Furthermore, the Mercedes had uneven, excessive tread wear, and cords had appeared on one of the tires.

The criminal case was being handled by the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee.

"A review of the case materials by the Prosecutor General's Office has established that the preliminary investigation was conducted thoroughly, objectively, and comprehensively, the accused's actions were correctly assessed, and the charges brought against him are substantiated by the evidence collected," the Prosecutor General's Office's Media Relations Department emphasized.

The Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic of Belarus upheld the previously chosen preventive measure for the Mercedes driver—pretrial detention.
