November 20, Gomel. At the request of the Chechersk District Prosecutor, five children have been placed in state care, the Gomel Region Prosecutor's Office information service told BelTA.
District prosecutors visited a large family and discovered unsafe living conditions for five children, aged 1 to 10. At the prosecutor's request, the minors were deemed in need of state protection and removed from their parents.
The large family had been under surveillance in the district for a long time. Last spring, the district executive committee's Juvenile Affairs Commission (JAC) confirmed that the family met criteria and indicators of a socially dangerous situation. The reason was the mother's antisocial lifestyle, which had been repeatedly documented as abusing
alcohol.
The family's case was raised again six months later at a regular JAC meeting.
It was then decided to continue the preventive work with the family.
"The district prosecutor's office reviewed the family's social support materials. The analysis showed that the repeated decision was made without a proper assessment of the situation and does not ensure the protection of the minors' legal rights and interests. When preventive care providers visited the family in July and August
2025, the minors' mother was in a state of
" She was found to have consistently failed to follow medical professionals' recommendations. In May,
a doctor suggested she seek medical attention because all the children had cold symptoms. After a follow-up visit, the situation remained unchanged—the minors were placed in the district hospital," the regional prosecutor's office reported.
During multiple visits to the family, unacceptable behavior was recorded. At times, the home lacked basic necessities: cooked food, food supplies, sleeping places for all the children, and clean bedding. "One June evening, the mother and children planned to spend the night in a barn." " As a result,
the children were hospitalized," the prosecutor's office noted, citing another incident.
In August, an 11-month-old boy spilled boiling water on himself and suffered a burn. The mother only contacted the first-aid station the following day, after which the child was taken to the hospital. The child sustained the injury due to the lack of proper supervision by his legal guardian. Earlier, in December
2024 , two other children sustained similar injuries under similar circumstances.
In October, prosecutors visited the family again and found the home completely unsanitary. Furthermore, the refrigerator contained a meager supply of food, and the one-year-old boy had a fever and a runny nose; there were no medications for treatment in the home.
Given the mother's alcohol abuse and failure to fulfill her responsibilities for the upbringing and support of her children, at the request of the Chechersky District Prosecutor, the Juvenile Affairs Commission decided to recognize the minors as requiring state protection. The children are currently being housed in a family-type orphanage.
