The Trump administration has launched a page on the White House website dedicated to the "true origins" of the SARS-CoV-2 CORONAVIRUS. it states that the pandemic originated fromcovid-19 was leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, CHINA.
The page presents arguments in support of this position, in particular, it states that:
These same five reasons were included in a 2024 report prepared by House Republicans, The Washington Post notes. The lawmakers also concluded that the outbreak began with a leak at a laboratory in China. The White House website also reiterates the report's assertion that former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases DIRECTOR Anthony Fauci "defended the preferred theory that COVID-19 arose naturally."
The new page replaces the previous Covid.gov, which provided information on how to fight the virus, access free testing, where to seek treatment, and where to get vaccinated. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease specialist and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for HEALTH Security, criticized the White House for removing this information and pointed out that the origins of the pandemic remain an open question. "The Trump administration is rewriting part of history and framing COVID-19 as a political event," he said.
The White House did not respond to a question from the newspaper about whether the Trump administration had received additional information about the origins of the virus since the congressional report was released.
In January, the new CIA leadership stated that it considered the possibility that COVID originated in a laboratory likely. Prior to this, the agency had maintained for several years that it did not have sufficient data to draw conclusions about the origins of the virus.
China has repeatedly denied the possibility of the coronavirus being man-made, demanding that the issue be stopped from being politicized and the country from being discredited. The World Health Organization is leaning toward the conclusion that the virus originated naturally. However, the WHO has complained that Beijing is failing to provide data for the investigation.
