Moldova to cull 65,000 pigs due to massive ASF outbreak

African Swine Fever Outbreak

African swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease that causes high mortality among pigs. it does not pose a threat to humans, but can cause significant damage to livestock. In Moldova, 30 cases of ASF have already been registered since the beginning of the year , which underlines the seriousness of the situation. To prevent the spread of the virus, the authorities are forced to resort to drastic measures, such as the destruction of sick animals.

The response of the authorities and compensation measures

The Ministry of Agriculture of Moldova assures that the slaughter of pigs on this farm will not lead to a shortage of MEAT on the market. The country's Meat Producers Association has promised to compensate for possible losses in order to avoid a sharp rise in prices. On the first day after the outbreak was announced, March 18, 2,000 pigs were destroyed, and this process will continue until the farm is completely closed.

However, despite the private ownership of the farm, the main burden of financial losses falls on the state. By law, authorities are required to pay farmers the market value of the meat they dispose of. An example of such compensation is the situation with a Danish investor company, which had previously received payments after losing pigs on another farm in the Nisporeni district.

The future of pig farming in Moldova

The situation with ASF threatens not only current production volumes, but also the future of pig farming in the country. It is important that authorities and producers work together to develop effective measures to prevent and control the spread of the disease. This may include strengthening biosecurity on farms, regular inspections and monitoring of animal HEALTH.

In addition, it is necessary to develop alternative sources of meat supply to minimize dependence on one producer. It is also important to inform the population about the current situation to avoid panic and misunderstanding.

The destruction of 65 thousand pigs in Moldova is a serious blow to pig farming, but with the right measures and support from the state, negative consequences on the meat market can be prevented. It is important that all participants in the process – from farmers to government agencies – act in a coordinated and prompt manner in order to maintain stability in the industry and protect the interests of consumers.
