According to Jorge Lopez, a member of Adicu, “Fortunately, the Uruguayan MEAT industry is very successful abroad, which has led to an increase in demand for imported meat.”
He also stressed that this growth allowed prices to remain stable in the local market, despite the steady rise in meat costs worldwide.
"We import to ensure supply and, above all, to support prices for beef , as well as pork and chicken," Lopez said.
On the other hand, he stressed that although imported meat is considered to be of poor quality, this is not true. "Our meat quality is very good. We bring meat from Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina, it is of excellent quality, and people accept it," he said.
“Today we would have to say that meat, if it were 100% domestic, would cost 50 or 100 pesos more than it does today,” he concluded.
