According to the Embrapa Pig and Poultry Analytical Center (CIAS), 2023 ended with the cost of a kilogram of live pig reaching 6.20 reais. Although the ICPSuíno production cost index has increased since October (reaching 354.90), production costs have decreased over the 12 months of last year. Pig production costs fell 23.16% in 2023.

In December, the growth of the ICPSuíno index was influenced by the cost of animal feed, which increased by 1.61% and accounted for 74.83% of the total value. As a result, the total cost of production per kilogram of live pigs produced in the farrow-to-finish system in Santa Catarina reached R$6.20 in December, an increase of R$0.08/kg compared to November.

The state of Santa Catarina is used as a benchmark in CIAS calculations because it is the country's leading pork producer and production costs are a benchmark for the manufacturing sector. However, independent pig and poultry farmers working under integration contracts must monitor the dynamics of their own production costs.
