The proportion of free-range eggs increased from 15.9% to 21.5% and the proportion of organic eggs from 10.7% to 13.8% over the same period.
The average number of laying hens in 2022 decreased by 1.4% compared to the previous year and amounted to about 26.2 million heads. After declining the previous year, the average number of free-range laying hens increased by almost 1 million to 9.5 million in 2022 (+11.7%). Free-range eggs increased by almost 299 million to 2.8 billion eggs (+11.8%).
In organic production, the average number of laying hens increased by almost 411 thousand heads to 6.2 million heads (+7.1%). Organic chickens laid an additional 109 million eggs last year. Thus, the number of organic eggs increased by 6.3% to 1.8 billion.
