In this video we will continue to talk with Baurzhan Kenesbekovich Ospanov about sogym. And we will answer the question: what is sogym and why is it so important for the Kazakhs?

Sogym is a tradition of the Kazakh people associated with the slaughter of livestock in the autumn-winter period. This tradition has deep historical and cultural roots and plays an important role in the life of Kazakh nomads.
Segeum is also an important social event. Relatives and neighbors gather together to take part in the slaughter of livestock and share the meat. This strengthens family and community ties, promoting unity and mutual assistance.
Thus, sogym is not just a way of preparing meat for the winter, but also an important element of the cultural heritage of the Kazakh people, reflecting their traditions, values and way of life.

At the beginning of winter, most often in mid-December, with the onset of cold weather, depending on the region, horses are slaughtered for the winter. At this time, horses are the most well-fed.
This tradition is primarily of a practical nature - to stock up as much meat as possible for the cold season, when meat can be stored for a long time. Sogym was calculated so that it would last the family until spring.

Sogym is a big holiday , it is customary to invite relatives, neighbors, and friends.
Before starting, the most respected person (usually an elder) reads a prayer and gives his blessing. After this, the horse is cut and the carcass is immediately cut into pieces. Women bring large dishes and warm water in advance, and then begin to clean the intestines for the kazy. At the same time, kuyrdak is prepared from certain parts, which is served to all those present.

According to tradition, part of the meat is distributed to the sybag, and certain parts of the sybag are also given to those who took part, for those who were unable to attend. It is very important to leave part of the sybag for loved ones, those who are far away, and this part can be stored for a whole year, as a sign of respect for the person.

But not only horses are slaughtered for sogym; those who have the opportunity also slaughter other animals, such as bulls or camels.
