Poland has prepared proposals for a new package of sanctions against Russia, REUTERS learned. Among the proposals are a ban on oil supplies via the northern branch of the Druzhba oil pipeline, as well as restrictions on the import of diamonds and gas.
Warsaw's written proposal was delivered to the European Commission this month, a source told Reuters. The agency notes that this "marks the first salvo in long and difficult negotiations between the 27 countries of the bloc."
So, as part of the 11th package of anti-Russian sanctions, Poland proposed:
completely stop the import of Russian oil through the northern branch of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which runs from Russia to Poland and Germany; completely ban the import of Russian diamonds and gas; impose sanctions against Russia's nuclear power industry.According to Reuters, Germany and Lithuania are also in favor of sanctions on nuclear energy, while Hungary and France do not support this decision. Belgium, in turn, does not support a ban on the import of Russian diamonds, the agency notes.
The European Union has already imposed ten packages of sanctions against Russia. The last one was agreed on 25 February. Restrictions were imposed against 96 organizations, the Arabic service of RT and radio Sputnik were banned from broadcasting in the EU, and the lists of goods prohibited for EXPORT from Russia were expanded, including bitumen and rubber. Blocking sanctions affected Tinkoff Bank, Rosbank, the National Wealth Fund and other organizations.

The Druzhba oil pipeline was built in the 1960s. It follows from Samara to Mozyr (Gomel region of Belarus), after which it is divided into two branches - northern and southern. The first goes through the territory of Belarus, Poland, Germany, Latvia and Lithuania, the second - through the territory of Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia. The total length of the pipelines is 8900 km.
In addition, the EU has been discussing possible sanctions against Russian diamonds for a long time, but Belgium, which hosts the “world diamond center”, has repeatedly opposed restrictive measures. The Belgian authorities believe that the sanctions will only lead to the redirection of exports from Russia to other countries.
The Russian nuclear industry is also not subject to EU sanctions, but on the eve of the sanctions against the industry were supported by the German authorities. MEPs interviewed by Izvestia did not previously rule out that the 11th package of EU sanctions could be introduced as early as April.
The Russian Foreign Ministry calls the sanctions illegitimate, and President Vladimir Putin calls them insane and thoughtless. In his opinion, the calculation of Western countries for the collapse of the Russian economy did not materialize.
