The United States has submitted a draft UN Security Council resolution that would lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday.REUTERS with reference to the relevant document.

The draft resolution also lifts sanctions against Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab. it is not yet known when the document might be put to a vote. For the initiative to pass, it requires at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from the permanent members—Russia, CHINA , the United States, France, and the United Kingdom .

Washington has been calling on the UN Security Council to ease sanctions against Syria for several months, the agency notes. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (designated a terrorist group and banned in RUSSIA), which came to power after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's government in December 2024, has been under Security Council restrictions since May 2014.

In May, Trump announced a change in US policy toward Syria and the lifting of economic sanctions against the republic, which had been in place since 2024 (though measures against Assad and "associated individuals" remained in place). The European Union also decided to lift restrictions against Syria following the change of government there.

Ahmed al-Sharaa will meet with Trump on November 10, marking the Syrian leader's first-ever visit to the White House, Axios reports. US Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barak said al-Sharaa is expected to sign an agreement to join the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State (a terrorist organization banned in Russia).

Following the visit, a fifth round of direct talks between Israel and Syria, mediated by the United States, is expected to take place, Barak said, noting that Washington's goal is to reach an agreement on border security between the two countries by the end of the year.
