Imposing sanctions against Russia would be disastrous for Georgia, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said. And he said that the authorities of the republic “absolutely openly” declared that they would not join the anti-Russian restrictions.
“How can you join the sanctions, being unsure that we will harm Russia by doing so? On the contrary, we would harm ourselves, and that would be hara-kiri,” Kaladze said.
The mayor stressed that the main task of the ruling Georgian Dream party is to ensure stability, economic growth and peace, and the 2008 conflict showed how much damage military operations can do to the republic.
Georgia, after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine , decided not to impose sanctions against Moscow. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili explained that he acts in the interests of the country and the people.
The Russian leadership has said that Washington, Brussels and London are trying to convince the Georgian leadership "of the need to open a so-called second front" in order to regain control over Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In particular, the HEAD of the Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergei Naryshkin, spoke about this. Garibashvili said that his party will not allow the opening of a second front in Georgia as long as it remains in power.
On May 1, Kaladze complained that Georgia had not received EU candidate status because of its stance on anti-Russian sanctions. “I have said many times and I will say again that Georgia deserved the status of a candidate for the European Union. <...> We were the first to deserve it. <...> I will always be happy with the success of Ukrainians. However, if you look realistically, with parameters and figures, Georgia is the first to take concrete steps - to carry out reforms, fight corruption,” the mayor says.
