U.S. President Donald Trump accused the Chinese authorities on Thursday of failing to fulfill their promise to increase purchases of agricultural products from the United States.

"CHINA is letting us down, not buying from our great farmers, as he promised. I hope they start [purchasing] soon," Trump wrote on his Twitter page.

The U.S. president also noted that "Mexico is making great progress at the border [on the migration issue].

In January, China proposed to gradually increase the volume of purchases of U.S. goods over a period of six years, for a total amount of more than $1 trillion, in order to reduce the U.S. trade deficit with China to zero.

The PRC and the U.S. have been negotiating trade dispute settlement for several months. The last (11th) round was held in the first half of May in the U.S. capital, but after that the dialogue reached an impasse. On May 10, Washington introduced additional duties on Chinese products worth $200 billion, raising the rate from 10% to 25%. In early June, the Chinese government took retaliatory action against more than 5,000 U.S. merchandise items worth $60 billion.

The decision to resume consultations was reached during a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Osaka on June 28-29. The U.S. leader promised not to introduce new tariffs on goods from China, as well as to ease restrictions on the activities of HUAWEI. In response, Beijing expressed its willingness to increase purchases of agricultural products from the United States.
