Aurus came under new US sanctions

The Russian luxury car brand Aurus has fallen under new US sanctions , according to a list published by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Treasury.

The list includes the Aurus plant in Yelabuga. In addition, the United States imposed sanctions against FSUE NAMI.

NAMI has been leading the Aurus project since 2013. Then the government instructed the Automotive Institute to develop a family of cars on the Unified Modular Platform (UMP) for transporting the country's top officials and allocated 12.4 billion rubles for the first stage of the project.

In 2017, Aurus LLC was created on the basis of NAMI-auto. Initially, 75% of Aurus belonged to NAMI, the remaining 25% to Sollers, which became the production partner of the project. In 2019, the Arab fund Tawazun bought 36% of Aurus for €110 million. After this transaction, NAMI, according to Vedomosti, remained with 63.5%, Sollers - 0.5%.

In May 2021, serial production of Aurus was launched in Tatarstan in the special economic zone "Alabuga", the first model being the Aurus Senat. In January 2023, Kommersant, citing sources, reported that Aurus cars could begin to be assembled at the former Toyota plant in St. Petersburg .

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly used cars of this brand . In September 2023, he showed Aurus cars from his motorcade to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un when he arrived in Russia on an official visit. In February, Putin gave him a car of this brand.
