Russia sets new record for coronavirus deaths

Over the past 24 hours, 669 people have died from coronavirus in the country, according to the operational headquarters for combating the spread of COVID-19 . This is a new absolute maximum since the beginning of the pandemic.

In total, according to the operational headquarters, the coronavirus claimed the lives of 135.2 thousand people. 21,042 people fell ill in the last 24 hours. The total number of people infected since the beginning of the pandemic has reached 5,514 people.

The data of the operational headquarters on mortality from coronavirus differ from the calculations of Rosstat. From April 2020 to April 2021, the agency counted about 270 thousand deaths. The two-fold difference is explained by a different calculation method - Rosstat includes cases where the coronavirus was detected after death, as well as deaths caused by other diseases against the background of COVID-19.

The following regions are leading in terms of the increase in new infections:

Moscow (5823); Moscow region (2583); St. Petersburg (1503); Nizhny Novgorod region (358); Bryansk region (324).
