Russia took third place in terms of the number of medals won at the Olympics. Russian athletes won 71 medals (20 gold, 28 silver and 23 bronze). In the medal standings, the representatives of the United States were the first , who took 113 medals (a third of the total number of awards). They have 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze medals. The second place went to the Chinese team with 88 medals (38 gold, 32 silver and 18 bronze). In the overall medal standings, Russia took only fifth place. The Russian team, in addition to the USA and China, was ahead of Japan and Great Britain. The Japanese took a total of 58 medals, the British - 65, but due to the greater number of gold medals (27 from Japan and 22 from Britain), they managed to bypass the Russian team.
