The recognition of the American company Meta Platforms, which owns Facebook and Instagram, as extremist and the ban on its activities in Russia will not lead to additional restrictions for ordinary users, Roskomnadzor told RBC (access to the resources themselves was blocked earlier, WhatsApp was not affected).
On March 21, the Tverskoy Court of Moscow satisfied the claim of the Prosecutor General's Office related to Meta's policy in relation to calls for violence against Russians, including military personnel.
“In accordance with the explanations of the General Prosecutor’s Office, the lawsuit is not aimed at restricting the use of Meta software products by both individuals and legal entities that are not involved in activities prohibited by law,” the RKN said.
Roskomnadzor will exclude Meta from the list of foreign entities operating on the Internet in Russia, and Instagram and Facebook from the register of social networks.
The agency also clarified that the media must label Meta, Instagram and Facebook as organizations whose activities are prohibited in Russia (according to Article 4 of the law "On Mass Media"), and must not display their logos. In the absence of labeling, the media will be held liable, but first the organizations must be included in the list of the Ministry of Justice. While Meta, Instagram and Facebook are not listed in it.
