Auto-translation from Ukrainian will appear on YouTube

Auto-translation for videos in Ukrainian will appear on YouTube next month, said the CEO of GOOGLE Inc. and its parent company Alphabet Sundar Pichai at the company's developer conference. A transcript of his speech was published on the Google blog.

According to Pichai, this innovation is part of a larger effort by Google to increase access to accurate information about the fighting in Ukraine. In addition, automatic translation from 16 languages on YouTube is now available on mobile devices.

So far, auto-translated captions are available on the video platform for content in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Dutch, Indonesian, and Vietnamese.

Roskomnadzor called Youtube "one of the key platforms participating in the information war against RUSSIA." At the end of March, the agency threatened Google with two administrative protocols under Art. 13.41 of the Code of Administrative Offenses due to the refusal of the video platform to remove materials about the Russian military operation in Ukraine at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office. The company faces a fine of up to 8 million rubles, and in the event of a repeated violation, the amount of the penalty may increase to 20% of annual revenue.

According to Roskomnadzor, video hosting “openly promotes the dissemination of false content containing unreliable socially significant information about the course of a special military operation in Ukraine that discredits the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation”, as well as calls for violence against the Russian military and materials of extremist organizations, including “ Right Sector” and the “Azov” regiment (both recognized as extremist in Russia and banned).

In late February, Google banned Russian state media from advertising on its platforms, then blocked RT and Sputnik channels in Europe. In March, YouTube blocked 54 Russian media channels, including RBC, RIA Novosti, Rossiya 24 and Channel One. Before that, the Spas TV channel was blocked. In mid-April, YouTube blocked the channels of regional branches of the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company without explanation.
