Local situation

Currently, several outbreaks of the disease have been registered near the border with Hungary. These farms are included in surveillance zones where further cases of the disease are registered. Foot-and-mouth disease is known to be a highly contagious virus that can spread quickly among animals, making it dangerous not only for the health of livestock, but also for the economies of countries dependent on livestock farming.

Measures taken by neighbors

Neighboring Austria, aware of the risks associated with the possible penetration of the virus, has already taken a number of measures to protect its territory. More than two dozen checkpoints on the border with Hungary and Slovakia have been closed, and thorough checks are being carried out at the remaining checkpoints. Cars and pedestrians pass through special epidemic mats, which help minimize the risk of infection transmission. The police also inspect cars for meat products, which is an important precaution.

Criticism of the European Commission's measures

Rosselkhoznadzor and the All-Russian Research Institute of Animal Health have expressed concern about the insufficient effectiveness of the measures taken by the European Commission. Open checkpoints may become a potential corridor for the virus to enter other EU countries . Despite all efforts, thorough checks do not guarantee complete safety. In this regard, experts insist on the need to recognize the entire territory of Slovakia and Hungary as unfavorable for foot-and-mouth disease and suspend all movements from these countries.

The importance of a rapid response

The situation requires a rapid response from both government agencies and farmers. It is important not only to limit the movement of animals and livestock products, but also to conduct information campaigns among the population about the signs of the disease and precautions. Timely detection and isolation of sick animals can significantly reduce the risk of further spread of the infection. Foot-and-mouth disease

poses a serious threat to animal husbandry in Slovakia and neighboring countries. Coordinated action is needed at the EU level to prevent the spread of the virus and protect animal health. Only by joint efforts can we minimize the consequences of this infection and ensure the safety of livestock enterprises in the region.
