British startup Meatly has received the green light from UK regulators to use lab-grown meat in pet food, with plans to initially focus on dogs.
The first batches of pet food containing cultured chicken are expected to hit stores later this year after taste testing on dogs.
This means the UK will become the first European country where people will be able to buy lab-grown pet food.
Owen Ensor, chief executive and co-founder of Meatly, said it followed a push by regulators and government to support food innovation and speed up approval processes after Brexit, with the UK taking advantage of its "massive advantage".
