US President Donald Trump is in no rush to lift sanctions against Moscow, but is instead escalating them, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during a government hour in the Federation Council.
He recalled how Trump accused his predecessorJoe Biden's actions undermined faith in the DOLLAR and pushed BRICS countries to seek alternative payment platforms.
"This process, aptly noted by the current US President, is now accelerating not only within BRICS. And Biden is certainly not alone in this, nor are the sanctions the culprit, which, incidentally, the current US leader is not only in no hurry to lift, but is actually escalating," he said ( quoted by RIA Novosti).
In July, Trump threatened countries that support BRICS policies with additional 10 percent tariffs. "There's this little group called BRICS. It's rapidly losing its relevance," he said.
On November 21, the American leader stated that Washington was imposing "very powerful" sanctions against Russia and had no plans to lift them. "I have no intention of doing anything to lift the sanctions," Trump added.
Trump's statement came just days after Washington unveiled its peace plan for Ukraine . The document has already been significantly updated. The US is currently negotiating the final version of the agreement with Kyiv and Moscow.
At the end of October, the United States imposed sanctions against two of Russia's largest oil companies: Rosneft and LUKOIL, due to Russia's "lack of serious interest in the peace process."
Russian President Vladimir Putin called the new restrictions an attempt to pressure Moscow. However, he emphasized that self-respecting states never do anything under pressure. The Foreign Ministry, for its part, noted that this step is counterproductive and will not cause Moscow any serious problems.
