December 20, Minsk . The Bykhovsky district department of the Investigative Committee is investigating a criminal case against a driver who, having committed a fatal accident, fled the scene and then set fire to his personal car so as not to leave evidence of his guilt. The official representative of the Criminal Investigation Department for the Mogilev region, Tatyana Starosotnikova, shared details of the criminal investigation with BELTA.
On the evening of December 17, in the village of Nikonovichi, Bykhovsky district, a local resident near her house found a neighbor lying on the roadway without signs of life. A few minutes before, the woman heard a dull sound from the street, and ran out of the yard and saw a car moving away. A local resident called an ambulance and the police. Arriving doctors pronounced the man dead .It took law enforcement officers several hours to reconstruct the picture of what happened and establish the events preceding the tragedy. Around the same time, the police received a call about a stolen vehicle, and hunters called the local fire department and reported a burning car on the outskirts of the forest. Having compared the facts and events of the tragic evening,Law enforcement officers came to the conclusion that the same person was involved in the accident and the arson of the car - a 45-year-old resident of the village of Krasnaya Sloboda, who reported the theft.
At the time of his arrest the man was in a state ofalcohol intoxication . A medical examination showed the presence of at least 0.8 ppm of alcohol in the suspect’s body. Having sobered up, he confessed. The accused said that he started drinking alcohol since lunch. Towards evening, the defendant decided to visit his daughter living in a neighboring village, but on the way he hit a pedestrian who was walking in the same direction. A feeling of fear prevailed over common sense, and the driver, hoping to get rid of his problems, burned the car.
The 45-year-old driver was charged under Part 4 of Article 317 (violation of traffic rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, resulting in the death of a person through negligence) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. A preventive measure in the form of detention was applied to him. Previously, the man was prosecuted for a “drunk” accident with a fatal outcome. The final legal assessment of his actions will be given based on the results of the criminal investigation.
