The Moscow (Minsk) district department of the Investigative Committee has completed an investigation into a criminal case against a Minsk resident who tortured his wife for more than a year in front of her minor children. According to the materials of the criminal case, over the past four years of family life, the spouses’ relationship has noticeably deteriorated. Both abused alcohol and conflicts often arose between them, during which the man used brute force. The woman was in constant fear and suffered beatings, since she and her children were financially dependent on their partner. However, since last year the tense situation has deteriorated significantly and is completely out of control.

According to investigators, on the night of August 31 last year, the couple were drinking as usual.alcohol and because of disagreements, they had a fight. During the showdown, the husband became angry with his wife and hit her several times. The couple quarreled for some time and after a fight went to their rooms. But such fights began to be repeated weekly, and each time the man beat his wife more and more, because of which she even sought medical help. The wife repeatedly told her husband that she would write a statement to the police, but such warnings did not stop the aggressor. In addition, the head of the family was not ashamed to sort things out in front of his wife’s minor children.

Reconstructing the chronology of events, investigators found that the woman’s relatives knew that their relative had been in a dangerous situation for several years. They noticed that the victim had recently looked depressed and persuaded her to get qualified psychological help. In addition, a constant witness to domestic violence, the victim’s 15-year-old daughter, regularly recorded on her mobile phone her stepfather beating her mother. The last conflict between the couple occurred in December last year. The couple quarreled, after which the defendant, out of habit, “talked” to his wife using his fists. However, this time the desperate woman decided to contact law enforcement agencies.

During interrogations, the accused did not deny his guilt and explained that his aggressive behavior was a consequence of a harmful craving for alcohol. Investigators interrogated the defendant, the victim and witnesses, studied and added to the materials of the criminal case the conclusions of expert studies conducted by SSSE specialists, as well as information stored on the phone of the victim’s minor daughter. The actions of the 32-year-old man are qualified under Part 2 of Article 154 (torture committed against a person in a dependent position known to be guilty) of the Criminal Code. A preventive measure was applied to him in the form of a ban on certain actions.

The Criminal Investigation Department for the city of Minsk reminds citizens of the inadmissibility of keeping silent about precedents of domestic violence.
