Foreign Ministry response to RT blocking in Germany
Moscow decided to respond to the ban on the broadcasting of the Russian TV channel RT DE with restrictions on German media and journalists. The Deutsche Welle broadcaster, which has state status, was hit first. His broadcasting in Russia will be stopped, the bureau will be closed, journalists will be deprived of accreditation. And at the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to initiate the procedure for assigning DW the status of a foreign agent.
video The measures announced by the Foreign Ministry against Deutsche Welle are only the first stage, “information on the subsequent stages of response measures will be published in a timely manner,” the department warned. According to RBC, the Foreign Ministry has already asked German media accredited in Russia (there are 24 in total) to provide information on the availability of budget funding. Next week new sanctions may be imposed on them .
“If common sense prevails in Germany and the persecution of Russian media stops, then Moscow will be happy to return the situation to the status quo,” said one of RBC’s interlocutors. But at the moment, Russia does not see that the German authorities, "who subjected the Russian media to illegal persecution, were ready to change their position," the RBC source emphasized.
RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan thanked the authorities for the decision to block DW in Russia. And Deutsche Welle itself believes that the ban on broadcasting in Russia and the closure of local bureaus is an excessive measure on the part of the Russian authorities, so the broadcaster will challenge this decision. The Russian authorities asked the German media for data on state funding Politics
