EU ambassadors agreed on the sixth package of Russian sanctions

EU countries could not agree on it for a long time due to disagreements on the embargo on Russian oil. It was adopted with exceptions, the full list will be published on June 3. Prohibit the import of oil by sea,

The ambassadors of the EU member states approved the sixth package of sanctions against RUSSIA. This was reported by REUTERS with reference to the diplomat and the French representation to the EU on Twitter.

The agreement became possible after the countries agreed to remove the HEAD of the Russian Orthodox Church and close Kremlin ally Patriarch Kirill from the proposed sanctions list.

The French mission clarifies that the package includes, among other things, sanctions against security and military personnel, Russian organizations in the industrial and technological sectors, "oligarchs", "representatives of Russian propaganda" and their families, as well as a ban on the import of Russian oil by sea.

“The package of sanctions will soon be supplemented by a ban on oil imports from Russia through the pipeline,” the representative office notes.

The list of sanctions includes disconnecting three Russian banks from SWIFT, including Sberbank, as well as a ban on the EXPORT of chemical products and high-tech goods to Russia.

The sanctions also include a ban on providing services to the Russian oil sector, a ban on consulting services to Russian companies, and the inclusion on the restrictive list of "three Russian media outlets involved in the dissemination of propaganda."

“This package of sanctions will be adopted by the Council of Europe and published tomorrow [June 3] in the official journal of the EU,” the statement said.

The European Union has been preparing the sixth package of sanctions against Russia since May. Previously, it was supposed to include a complete ban on the supply of Russian oil to Europe. New sanctions must be agreed upon by all member countries of the union, but the oil embargo was opposed, in particular, by Slovakia and Hungary. The latter blocked consideration of the issue of banning oil supplies from Russia from May 8, insisting on exceptions and compensation for the costs of restructuring the country's energy system in case of refusal of Russian oil.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest would like the ban not to apply to the import of crude oil through pipelines. The Hungarian Foreign Ministry pointed out that 85% of all gas consumed in Hungary and 65% of oil are supplied from Russia, which "cannot be replaced overnight."

A compromise option was a ban on the supply of Russian oil by sea and the continuation of imports through the Druzhba pipeline, through which raw materials are delivered to eight European countries, including a separate branch to Hungary. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called it a "good decision".

Hungary also demanded that Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' be excluded from the proposed sanctions list, explaining this by the need to respect the right to freedom of religion. The ban on the purchase of real estate by Russians in the European Union was also excluded from the package of sanctions; Cyprus objected to it.

On May 30, a meeting was held on the introduction of the sixth package of sanctions. During it, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that EU members agreed on all the points of the package, except for a complete oil embargo. Then she stated that the final decision on this issue would not be made in the next couple of days.

European countries began to tighten sanctions against Russia from the end of February, the EU introduced the previous package of sanctions on April 8. It included a ban on the purchase, import or transit of coal and other solid fossil fuels (oil shale, peat) from Russia.

The EU also banned ships flying the Russian flag from entering European ports (exceptions are possible for ships that transport agricultural products, food, humanitarian aid), and also restricted the transportation of goods of Russian and Belarusian companies through the EU.

EU sanctions have previously been imposed against Russian officials, businessmen, parliamentarians, journalists and public figures, as well as against banks and companies.
