The head of Total warned of a possible shortage of gas in Europe this winter

If the winter is cold this year, then Europe may face a shortage of gas, said the head of Total. According to him, even with the full filling of European UGS facilities by October, these reserves may not be enough Head of Totalenergies Patrick Pouyanne

Europe could face gas shortages this winter if it turns out to be colder than last year, Patrick Pouyanne, head of France's TotalEnergies, said.

“As for gas, the storage will be full in October, but if the winter in Europe is cold, these reserves on the continent will not be enough to meet demand throughout the winter season,” Pouyanne said.

At the same time, he noted that European countries will have to import gas at higher prices. “There are no friendly prices in the market, where everything depends on supply and demand,” said the head of Total.

The energy crisis in Europe has continued since last year, amid rising gas prices and reduced supplies from Russia, preceded by Western sanctions and Moscow's retaliatory measures. Thus, last year gas prices in the EU reached record levels, rising above $3,000 per 1,000 cubic meters. m, due to which the association countries agreed to reduce gas consumption by 15% until the end of March 2023. At the same time, a price ceiling for Russian gas was adopted - the EU agreed on it in the amount of €180 per megawatt-hour (about $2,000 per 1,000 cubic meters).

Bloomberg wrote that the EU was saved from the energy crisis by anomalous heat in the winter of 2022-2023. At the same time, citing experts, the agency wrote that in the face of the refusal of Russian fuel, high gas prices in Europe will continue until 2030.

In early July, the head of the Italian energy company Eni, Claudio Descalzi, said that Europe was able to completely replace Russian gas supplies within two years. He added that European countries are in different conditions of gas supply, and noted that production in the region has risen in price in the current geopolitical situation. Gas for industry now costs four to five times as much, Descalzi argued.
