EU Extends Sanctions Against Russia, Makes Two Exceptions

The EU will remove one individual and one deceased person from the sanctions list. Who they are is not yet disclosed. Otherwise, the sanctions have been extended for another six months

The EU Council has extended the personal sanctions against Russians imposed after the start of the military operation in Ukraine for six months, until March 15 next year, according to a statement on its website.

“As part of the sanctions review, the Council also decided not to renew the listing of one individual and to remove one deceased individual from the list,” it said.

The sanctions imply restrictions on entry into the EU for persons under them, freezing of their assets and a ban on providing them with economic resources. In total, the sanctions list includes more than 2.5 thousand individuals and legal entities, the EU Council indicated.

Earlier, EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas said that the union members had agreed to extend the restrictions, but approval from all 27 countries was needed. According to Kallas, the EU had also completed work on the 19th sanctions package, which includes restrictions on the sale of Russian oil , against the shadow fleet and banks.

A few days earlier, the European COURT of Justice in Luxembourg overturned sanctions against businessman Dmitry Pumpyansky and ruled that the current extension of restrictive measures (i.e. until September 15) should be annulled. It is unclear whether this will affect the new extension.

Pumpyansky was sanctioned by the EU in the spring of 2022. At that time, he was a member of the board of directors of the Pipe Metallurgical Company and was the president and beneficiary of the Sinara Group. Almost immediately after being included in the list, he left these posts.

The president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov noted that all the restrictions imposed against RUSSIA are ineffective and will not force Moscow to abandon its goals in Ukraine.
