US allies , including those in Africa, Latin America and Asia, are rejecting Washington's requests to impose sanctions against RUSSIA or "at least criticize it" for its military operation in Ukraine, The Economist article says.

According to the authors, the most uncomfortable position for the United States is occupied by India, whose authorities "consistently refrain" from condemning Russia for actions in Ukraine.

Many states, the publication says, have reasons to refrain from criticizing Moscow: because of commercial interests, ideological convictions, strategic ambitions. As an example, the authors cite Turkey, 45% of the country's gas needs are covered by Russia .

The ambassador said that the United States is intimidating Latin American countries because of Russia Politics

After the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, several rounds of sanctions against Russia were imposed by the United States, the European Union, Great Britain, CANADA, Australia, Japan and other states. In early March, BLOOMBERG called Russia the world leader in terms of the number of restrictions imposed against it: the country bypassed Iran, Syria and North Korea in this indicator.

The countries of Latin America and Africa have not joined the sanctions measures. Some states have publicly condemned the restrictions. For example, Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos França called them "illegal" and infringing on the interests of some countries. However, at the same time, Chile and Argentina suspended the supply of lithium raw materials to Russia, which is necessary for the technological development of many industries.

On April 16, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov accused the United States of trying to intimidate Latin American states with threats of secondary sanctions "as punishment for not joining the anti-Russian campaign." This is how he reacted to the statement by US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols that Washington expects Latin American countries to "respect" the sanctions imposed on Russia.
