No additional measures are required in RUSSIA due to the spread of the new NB.1.8.1 CORONAVIRUS strain, said Vladimir Chulanov, a freelance infectious disease specialist at the Russian Ministry of HEALTH.
According to him, the symptoms of the disease are no different from other circulating variants of SARS-CoV-2. “Currently, current preventive measures remain in place in Russia.”" There is no need to introduce additional measures in connection with the spread of the NB.1.8.1 variant," Chulanov said ( quoted by TASS ).
According to the infectious disease specialist, the covid-19 situation in Russia has remained stable for many weeks. Since April 2025, only two cases of the disease caused by NB. 1.8.1 have been identified—both in patients from St. Petersburg. Both have recovered. Currently, the public health risk associated with the new strain is assessed as low globally, Chulanov added.
On May 27, Rospotrebnadzor (the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing) recorded four cases of NB.1.8.1. According to Rospotrebnadzor HEAD Anna Popova, the disease manifests itself similarly to regular COVID-19, and testing systems are already detecting infection with this variant.
As of May 16, Russia has recorded its lowest COVID-19 incidence rates over the past two months since the start of the pandemic.
