Vietnam registers first vaccine against African swine fever

Vietnamese authorities have approved the commercial use of two domestic African swine fever vaccines. The corresponding messages appeared on Monday, July 24. These are the world's first mass-produced vaccines against this deadly disease.

According to the government statement, the NAVET-ASFVAC vaccine is a joint development of Navetco Central Veterinary Medicine and American scientists, while the AVAC ASF LIVE vaccine was developed by AVAC Vietnam JSC.

Registration of vaccines can become a prerequisite for organizing their supply to other countries and will make it possible to achieve great success in the fight against one of the deadly animal diseases, which poses a serious threat to the entire global pig industry.

The volume of the world market of pork reached 250 billion dollarsUnited States , but due to African swine fever, has been suffering significant losses for many years. During the worst outbreak in 2018-2019 in China, the world's largest producer, about half of the domestic pig population was killed, resulting in more than $100 billion in losses.

The Ministry of Agriculture of Vietnam has instructed manufacturing companies to develop plans for domestic and export sales of vaccines .

According to the government, vaccines have been shown to be 95% effective in pig farm trials in 40 provinces. More than 650,000 doses of vaccines have been administered to animals.

“The vaccines are suitable for nationwide use,” the ministry said in a statement.

Last month, US Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack said that the United States, despite the absence of the virus in the country, is likely to purchase vaccines for preventive purposes.
