Key Provisions of the New Resolution
The resolution, adopted with 532 votes in favor, 78 against, and 25 abstentions, includes several key initiatives aimed at improving the situation of agricultural producers. One of the most important aspects is the mandatory conclusion of written contracts for the supply of agricultural products. This requirement applies to all market participants, with the exception of certain sectors that may be exempted from this obligation. The minimum threshold for exemption has been reduced from €10,000 to €4,000, allowing more farmers to benefit from the protection of their rights.
Fair Remuneration and Support for Local Producers
MEPs emphasize the need to ensure fairer and more stable remuneration for primary sector producers. In this regard, they advocate for the establishment of clear criteria for the use of the terms "fair" and "equitable" in the context of marketing, which should take into account farmers' contribution to rural development and the strengthening of cooperatives.
In addition, local, seasonal EU produce , as well as products with geographical indications of origin, will be prioritized in public procurement. This will not only support local producers but also help improve the quality and safety of products available to consumers.
Conditions for Reducing Intermediaries:
One important aspect of the new initiative is the definition of the term "short supply chain." This term will apply only to products produced in the EU with minimal intermediaries and limited processing or transportation. This will increase transparency and reduce costs, which in turn will be reflected in prices for the end consumer.
Strict Definition of "Meat":
Another significant point is the proposal to introduce a stricter legal definition of "meat." According to the new rules, this term will be limited to edible parts of animals, while laboratory-grown products will be excluded from this definition. This decision is aimed at protecting traditional animal farming and ensuring consumers receive high-quality products.
The European Parliament's initiatives to strengthen the role of farmers in the food chain reflect a commitment to creating a more equitable and sustainable agricultural and food system. In the face of global challenges such as climate change and growing demand for food , it is important that farmers are able to earn a fair wage for their work and contribute to rural development. The new regulations could be an important step toward improving the situation of agricultural producers and creating a more sustainable food system in Europe.
